5Robert Blake, The Conservative Party from Peel to Churchill (London, ), p. 6 Angus Hawkins, British Party Politics, (Basingstoke, ), pp. , 7 Cunningham, "Language of Patriotism." Research by Taylor and Paul Ward on the contested iconography of patriotism and the "oppositional Englishness" of British. Distilled from years of meticulous research and documentation, filled with material unavailable when the earliest books of the official biography's eight volumes went to press, Churchill is a brilliant marriage of the hard facts of the public life and the intimate details of the private man. The result is a vital portrait of one of the most remarkable men of any age as well as a revealing.

From May to May , Britain had been governed by a coalition government, with Conservative MP Winston Churchill as Prime Minister. Churchill had proved himself to be a popular leader during the Second World War, so he was confident that the Conservatives would win this election based on his wartime success.
